Leading up to Father's Day, Violence Free Waitakere sends out a broadcast to Waitakere Community at large recruiting families to send in their personal images of "Dads In Action", with their children, which are then entered into a competition for a series of great prizes. We then print out large images, where they are presented, celebrated and voted on by the public, by way of Libraries, Community Centres, Sports Clubs and Facebook. It's an amazing way to celebrate our wonderful dads and praise them for all they mean, plus enabling families of the community to make their own visual statement, supporting, "great parenting".
When then hit the malls and night markets, giving the public a chance to view and vote on their favourite photos, as well as be in a draw to win prizes. It also enables local family or parenting services to engage with those who may be new parents or just might just be in need of support services. A win-win situation. Plus it's fun.
Violence Free Waitakere has been running since 2010 and though initiated by us, but it couldn't be done without the collaboration of an array of participating agencies. In 2014 we had Plunket, Hippy, Man Alive, Dayspring and Waiparera, as well a other amazing agencies from our Promoting Great Parenting network who, broadcast Westie Dads, encouraging and promoting positive parenting skills.
Highlights from our last Westie Dads was well overr 30 photo entries by way of email and Facebook, with displays in multiple West Auckland libraries and Massey Leisure Centre and manned displays at Warehouse Westcity Mall, Lynn Mall and the Night Markets at Henderson and New Lynn leading up to Fathers Day. We had over 1828 votes, with 16,600 views of our Wonderful Westie Dads In Action photos.
